I have recently reinstalled Windows XP and I'm having some trouble with my drivers. First and foremost, I have no sound. When I look under Sound in the Device Manager, I only see:

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

I have tried installing every single driver on the emachines website for my model (W6409), but nothing has worked.

So, any ideas?

Also, under Other Devices, I have a ? with an ! on it for:

PCI Device
SM Bus Controller

Help please!

I appreciate your help, but nothing worked. I've installed everything you've presented me with and although I'm positive they installed correctly, nothing changes in the Device Manager.

When I reinstalled Windows XP, I didn't have my speakers plugged in at the time... would that have any effect? Would I have to reinstall again?

Not having them plugged in should make no difference. You should at least have a question mark in the sound section of device manager.

That's where the Realtek driver should appear.

Look in the bios and check sound is enabled. Even reset the CMOS:

I can't find anything that has to do with Sound on my BIOS when I reboot the computer. I checked every section of it and there isn't anything disabled that has to do with sound (that I can see of). Then again, I don't see anything enabled that has to do with sound.

Am I looking in the wrong place?

Also I tried the CMOS and all it seemed to serve to do is mess up my time and delete my theme.

Run bios setup and enter a date and time, exit saving changes. That's what is MEANT to happen! It forgets all previous, and possibly wrong, settings.

OK. With bios set to defaults, your audio should be enabled. So now you look in Sound in device manager for a question mark. Maybe even do that XP restore again, having saved the drivers to a CD-R for convenience. Especially the LAN driver.

Thanks for all your help Very Happy

I finally fixed it. I ran Aida32 to make sure I didn't have a sound driver enabled and then I tried Realtek HD Audio and it worked like a charm.

Thanks again!
