I'm not going to provide detailed disassembly instructions, because I did not take detailed enough photos. However here is some information that will be helpful.
  • You must remove the heat exchanger from the CPU. Thermal paste is required for reassembly!
  • Follow Ed's disassembly instructions which will get you to the first picture above. You do not need to remove the CPU.
  • There are at least 5 different size and shape screws that mount the motherboard to the chassis. Take careful note of which screw goes where. I laid them out in a pattern that matched where they came from, and used the first picture above to determine which holes received screws. I meant to take a picture of the screws all laid out but forgot. Sad
  • You must remove the HDD and the optical drive. Everything removable was taken off of the motherboard during disassembly, except for the modem, both RAM sticks, and the CPU.
  • You must remove the plastic HDD bracket, seen in the bottom left of picture number 1.

After ending up with a few extra screws  I took it all apart (to apply new thermal paste) and laid out all the screws in the order I took them out. This helped a lot for finding out where to put all the screws, since there were all put in the order I took them out.

After reading your post on hdd overheating, I desided to remove that black sticker too. But not only that, I also aded a "heatsink" (flat rectangular peice of metal, about 1.5mm thick) on the Ali south chip and some litlle sinks on other chips.

BTW I made a serch on ALI site for m1535+ driver and found the "Integrated 2.07" driver, after instaling my HDD bufer read/write bemchmark went from 20mb/s to 360mb/s :D

I would like to attach a heatsink as well, but I'll have to get ahold of one and open this thing back up another day.

Geez, why is that driver an 8 MB download?

Hey, Thanks. Nice find on the updated Southbridge drivers. To go from 20 to 360MB buffer read/write improvement has gotta be good!
I never really thought about adding a heatsink to the southbridge. They aren't really thought to run very hot. Well, I guess we learn something new every day! Looks like I got to open'er up again! Thanks Dan!

I'm not sure what the problem is but the drivers at the ATI site will not download. Anyone else have this problem?
