I have an eMachines laptop that I got for Christmas 2008. Recently, it has been doing a few strange things. In the bottom right hand toolbar there is an empty battery with an "x" over it and a plug-in thing. Whenever I scroll over it, the pop-up menu says "No battery is detected." Additionally, I can only turn on and use my laptop whenever it is plugged into the wall, not wirelessly.

I dropped it on the carpeted floor of my room. It wasn't a hard, momentous fall by any means, but I am wondering if there is a correlation. What should I do?

You could try to remove the battery and put it back in. While it's out, look for damage such as bent connections. Your battery might be damaged internally as well. If you know of another one that you can try without having to purchase a new one, I'd give that a try.
